Officers from the anti-organized crime division of the metropolitan police arrested and indicted Nobuyuki Toriumi, 40, a member of the Matsuba-kai criminal syndicate, for violating stimulants control and customs laws. Investigators are now attempting to determine whether the contraband was being used as a source of funds for the Matsuba-kai.
Police said Toriumi denied the allegations.
According to the indictment, the suspect allegedly instructed a female Japanese national in her 20s to carry 1,390 grams of stimulant drugs, with an estimated street value of 111.2 million yen, inside a carry-on suitcase during a flight from Hong Kong to Haneda Airport on August 14. The drugs were hidden inside an aluminum can.
