KANAGAWA (TR) – Kanagawa Prefectural Police have arrested a man and a male youth over a smash-and-grab break-in at a pawn shop in Atsugi City on Saturday.
Just after noon, suspects Yuji Todoroki, a 24-year-old resident of Gunma Prefecture, and the 19-year-old boy allegedly broke into the pawn shop and stole about 100 items, including Rolex wristwatches and necklaces, before fleeing.
Footage provided by Fuji News Network (Sep. 1) shows smashed glass display cases inside the pawn shop.
After fleeing, the pair were apprehended by passersby and others. One witness said, “The culprits had already been apprehended by the time we called the police.”
One of those who made the apprehension was a 30-year-old man. During the incident, the boy, who is from Chiba Prefecture, struck him in the head with a hammer.
Todoroki and the boy have admitted to the charges. The 19-year-old youth stated, “I took the Rolex and left the store, and hit the person who was chasing me with the hammer.”
The two suspects are believed to have applied for an illegal part-time job, and the police are investigating the possibility that there was a person who gave them orders. They are also investigating whether there were any other perpetrators.
