Man, 54, accused of fraudulently receiving welfare benefits used funds on ‘alcohol and cigarettes’

TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested a 54-year-old man on suspicion of fraudulently receiving 2.2 million yen in welfare benefits despite having an income.

Over a period of one and a half years since around April 2019, Isamu Sorime, a construction worker living in Kita Ward, is suspected of fraudulently receiving a total of 2.2 million yen in welfare benefits.

Upon his arrest, Sorime admitted to the allegations. “I used the money I obtained fraudulently for living expenses, including alcohol and cigarettes,” he said, according to Fuji News Network (Dec. 6).

When a ward employee visited Sorime’s home, they found his work clothes hanging out to dry, which led to discovery that he was fraudulently receiving the benefits.
