TOKYO (TR) – Authorities have arrested a 46-year-old man for allegedly scrawling graffiti at the Imperial Palace while it was open for the New Year’s holidays.
On Thursday, Daisuke Kobayashi, a landscape gardener, allegedly scrawled graffiti inside a toilet at the palace, reports Fuji News Network (Jan. 4).
In commenting on the allegations, Kobayashi said, “The reason I came to the Imperial Palace was to attend the public appearance [of the Emperor]. I suddenly had an idea when I stopped by the toilet and wrote it down.”
Authorities sent Kobayashi to prosecutors on Friday.
The toilet is located along a road used by people visiting the palace for the public appearance.
According to authorities, graffiti was also found on a nearby manhole. The Imperial Guard is investigating whether the two cases are related.
