Fukuoka man admits to trespassing ‘more than 1,000 times to relieve stress’

FUKUOKA (TR) – To be filed under: Everyone needs a hobby.

Fukuoka Prefectural Police arrested a 37-year-old man for trespassing on a couple’s property in Dazaifu City on Monday.

During questioning, Yuta Sugawara admitted to the allegations, telling police that he regularly commits the crime as “a hobby.”

At around 1:00 p.m. on Monday, a woman living in Dazaifu called police. “We’re apprehending a suspect for trespassing. When we called out to him, he ran away, so my husband apprehended him,” she said.

Police rushed to the scene and questioned Sugawara, a company employee living in the Sakamoto area of the city on suspicion of trespassing.

“There’s no doubt that I entered the property of a private residence without permission,” the suspect said. “The nerve-wracking feeling of wondering if I’ll be seen helps me relieve stress. Entering other people’s property is a hobby of mine, and I’ve done so more than 1,000 times. I only entered the properties, and never inside the houses.”

Police are now trying to connect Sugawara to other crimes.
