Ex-Tokyo city councilman suspected of raping more than 10 drugged or drunk men

TOKYO (TR) – A former Fuchu City councilman in custody over the alleged drugging and sexual assault of a man has been arrested for two other cases, police said.

Based on evidence seized in the investigation into Ryuichi Akita, 27, police believe that he carried out similar crimes with more than 10 men, according to the Asahi Shimbun (Nov. 28).

In the latest allegations, Akita is alleged to have sexually assaulted two drunk men, both aged in their 20s, at his then residence in Suginami Ward on December 31, 2021 and again on the following January 8.

Upon his arrest on suspicion of quasi-forced intercourse and quasi-forced indecent assault, he said, “I cannot say anything further.”

On November 6, police first arrested Akita for allegedly giving sleeping pills to a man in his 20s, whom he met at a local event, and then committing indecent acts against him.

During the course of the latter investigation, more than 100 obscene videos were found on Akita’s seized smartphone. It was through these videos that the latest victims were identified.

Police are continuing the investigation, believing that about one dozen men have been victims.

According to the Fuchu City Council Secretariat, Akita resigned from his post on November 11.
