Fukuoka man arrested for drunk cycling

FUKUOKA (TR) – Police in Fukuoka City have arrested a 38-year-old self-proclaimed restaurant worker for operating a bicycle while intoxicated after he initially blamed a wine tasting for his failed breathalyzer test, reports Nippon News Network (Oct. 8).

Early Thursday, patrolling officers in the bustling Tenjin district spotted Yasushi Akiyoshi riding a bicycle without its front light illuminated.

After stopping the cyclist and detecting the distinct smell of alcohol, officers administered a breath test. The results showed an alcohol concentration exceeding the legal limit, leading to Akiyoshi’s arrest in flagrante delicto.

Upon his arrest, the suspect initially denied the allegations with a creative excuse. “At my workplace, I did a wine tasting where I held the wine in my mouth and spit it out, but I did not drink it,” Akiyoshi told officers.

However, under further police questioning, his memory appeared to clear up. He later changed his tune, admitting, “I might have drunk wine while on the job.”
