AOMORI (TR) – Aomori Prefectural Police have arrested a 22-year-old company employee over the fatal hit-and-run of an 80-year-old woman.
The body of the woman body was undiscovered in tall grass for nearly a week after the collision, reports TV Asahi (Sep. 7).
Seiji Miura is accused of striking the elderly victim while driving on a national highway in the village of Rokkasho just after 9:30 p.m. on August 16.
Upon his arrest, Miura partially denied the allegations, offering a bizarre excuse for fleeing the scene. “I thought I collided with a deer,” the suspect told investigators. “I got out of the car and checked the vicinity, but I couldn’t find anything, so I drove away.”
Recent on-site investigations conducted by police, with the suspect present, confirmed that the stretch of road was pitch black at the time of the incident.
Due to the extreme darkness and the brutal force of the crash, the victim was not immediately located. It was not until six days later that her lifeless body was discovered in the brush beyond the road’s guardrail.
According to police, the woman had suffered a fractured pelvis, indicating she was violently launched through the air upon impact before landing completely out of sight.
