Fukushima man arrested for attempting to suffocate elderly wife with wet towel

FUKUOKA (TR) – Fukuoka Prefectural Police have arrested a 64-year-old man for attempting to murder his wife by suffocating her with a wet towel inside a vehicle.

Days later, the case took a turn when the suspect was found collapsed, reports TV Asahi (June 10).

Shinichiro Nakamura is accused of covering the mouth of his wife, who is in her 70s, with a wet towel on a forest road in Tamura City on June 1. Fortunately, the victim survived the ordeal and her condition is not life-threatening. Police recovered multiple towels from inside the vehicle.

In a strange twist, Nakamura remained stranded near the scene for five days following the alleged murder attempt. On June 6, he emerged to seek help from nearby residents.

According to reports, Nakamura first approached a home where he was turned away, and then found a second house to be empty. He eventually called out to a man doing farmwork, but was so severely weakened that he collapsed on the spot.

An acquaintance of the farmer who called emergency services described the scene: “He was driving a foreign car that was left tilting off the shoulder of the road. It seems the car got stuck and he had just been sitting there for days.”

During police questioning, Nakamura admitted to the allegations, telling investigators he had “become pessimistic about the future.”

Authorities revealed that this is not the first time they have dealt with the couple. Police had previously responded to a report of trouble between the two, treating a past incident as a domestic abuse case.
