MIYAGI (TR) – Police in Shiroishi City are on high alert after a gang of approximately 10 monkeys attempted to snatch a handbag from an elderly woman outside her home, reports Fuji News Network (June 6).
According to police, the incident occurred in the Obara district at around 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. The woman, who is in her 70s, was returning home when she was ambushed by the troop of primates gathered in front of her residence.
The monkeys chased the woman and aggressively attempted to rip her handbag from her grasp. Refusing to be a victim, the woman swung her bag at the assailants to drive them away. She managed to escape the ordeal without injury, while the monkeys fled back into the nearby mountains.
The scene of the attempted mugging is a residential area bordering a mountain forest, located dangerously close to Obara Elementary and Junior High School.
Following the incident, local police deployed patrol cars to the neighborhood, urging residents to remain vigilant against further primate attacks.
