AICHI (TR) – Police in Nagoya are hunting for two men who stole 200,000 yen from a 93-year-old woman using a coordinated distraction technique involving a mysterious liquid, reports Chukyo TV (May 14).
The incident occurred shortly before 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday on the grounds of a residential complex in the Meieki-minami area of Nakamura Ward. The elderly victim was returning home after withdrawing cash from a local financial institution.
According to police, a man approached the woman from behind and suddenly poured a whitish liquid over her head. Immediately following the bizarre assault, a second man approached the startled victim.
Feigning concern for her well-being, he pretended to help her, using the opportunity to reach into her bag and snatch an envelope containing her bankbooks and approximately 200,000 yen in cash.
The woman was not injured in the incident, and authorities believe the liquid used in the attack was not hazardous.
Investigative sources revealed that security cameras at the financial institution captured footage of a suspicious individual keeping a close watch on the woman before she headed home.
Police describe the two suspects as being between their 20s and 40s. Based on his manner of speaking, the victim reported that one of the men sounded like a foreigner.
Authorities are currently pursuing the whereabouts of the duo on suspicion of theft.
