TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police on Tuesday launched an investigation after a woman is believed to have strangled her daughter at their apartment in Toshima Ward before attempting suicide, reports TBS News (Apr. 28).
At around 12:50 p.m., a call was placed to emergency services. “I attempted suicide,” the call said.
When police officers arrived at the apartment in Minamiotsuka, they found the girl, believed to be a third-grade elementary school student, lying on a bed in the apartment. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Meanwhile, her mother, who was semi-conscious, was taken to a hospital.
Charcoal briquettes were found in the unit.
According to investigators, the mother made statements to the effect that she had strangled her daughter. Police are investigating the possibility that the woman strangled her daughter and tried to take her life by inhaling fumes from the burning briquettes in a murder-suicide attempt.
