Peruvian man suspected of breaking into Tokyo temple, injuring female priest

TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested a Peruvian man for allegedly breaking into a temple in Koganei City last year and assaulting the female head priest, reports Nippon News Network (Mar. 6).

On a night in July, Yuri Alex Nakano Verastegui Nakano, 23, allegedly broke into the temple, assaulted the female head priest, aged in her 80s, by hitting her in the face and stomach while she slept. He also attempted to steal cash and other items.

The head priest suffered various injuries, including broken ribs, that required four weeks to heal.

Police have not disclosed whether Nakano admits to the charges.

Nakano fled the scene without taking anything after the woman resisted the attack.

An examination of security camera footage shot nearby showed a suspicious motorcycle leaving the scene, which led to Nakano’s arrest.
