TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police launched an investigation following the discovery of a decayed corpse inside a residence in Edogawa Ward on Tuesday, reports the Sankei Shimbun (Jan. 13).
At around 11:50 a.m., the landlord of the building contacted police to report a strange odor coming from a cardboard box wrapped in a blanket inside one of the units.
When officers rushed to the scene and opened the box, they discovered the body placed in a plastic bag.
According to the police station, the body was in an advanced state of decomposition. The gender and approximate age are unknown.
A man in his 60s who lived in the room died in November of last year. The landlord made the discovery while sorting through his belongings.
Police are aware that he had a a roommate who was caring for him.
The unit has not been rented out since the death of the occupant. As well, no one has entered or left the room since.
Police are treating the case as abandoning a corpse.
