Chiba man arrested after wife takes fatal leap off cliff

CHIBA (TR) – Chiba Prefectural Police this week arrested a 63-year-old man over the fatal leap his wife took from a cliff in Katsuura City last month.

At around 3:00 p.m. on June 15, Mizuyo Nomura, 66, leaped off a cliff at Yawata Misaki Park, fatally plunging about 40 meters down to a rocky area below.

According to police, Naokuni Nomura, an office worker, witnessed the incident. Afterward, he left the scene without reporting it.

Upon his arrest on suspicion of abandoning a corpse on Thursday, Nomura, a resident of Midori Ward, Chiba City, admitted to the charges. “My wife jumped off of her own accord,” he told police.

Police said the cause of Mizuyo’s death is believed to be traumatic shock due to cerebral contusion and other injuries.

The day after the incident, Mizuyo’s body was found on the rocks. Police then launched an investigation. On July 8, a relative of Mizuyo reported the incident, which led to Nomura being questioned.

During questioning, he said, “We thought we would both die.” However, police are also investigating the possibility that Nomura may have pushed Mizuyo off the cliff.
