FUKUSHIMA (TR) – Several Buddhist statues were destroyed at two cemeteries in Sukagawa City, police said on Sunday, possibly by a man who was seen fleeing the scene.

A man near a cemetery heard what sounded like someone breaking apart rocks, and went to investigate when he discovered 14 destroyed or damaged Jizo Buddhist statues at around 6 a.m. on Saturday, TV Asahi reports (Dec. 4).

A tall individual with a thin profile wearing dark clothes was witnessed fleeing the scene, police said.

The same suspect could also be responsible for six statues that were found destroyed in a nearby cemetery, police said.
