AKITA (TR) – A man was killed by a bear while gathering bamboo shoots in Kazuno City, authorities said on Monday.

Noboru Takahashi, 78, was gathering bamboo shoots with his wife in a forest, sometime past 10 a.m. on Sunday when a bear showed up and killed him, police told Fuji News Network on Monday (May 23).

Takahashi’s whereabouts was unknown after he told his wife to run. Police believe he was killed by the bear after his body was found at around 1 p.m. with wounds to his head and stomach.

Another man who also went to gather bamboo was found dead near the site of the incident on Saturday. He is believed to have also been killed by a bear.
