    East Timor got its official independence on 20th May 2002, that is 8 years ago, not 4.
    It got its independence fro Indonesia, under Interfet and then UN administration, on 20th September 1999. (I was there from about 10th October for 4 months full time).
    But I agree it is still a country of great poverty, except for the elites.
