OSAKA (TR) – A 70-year-old man struck and killed a male bicyclist on a sidewalk during a fatal plunge from an apartment building in Kita Ward on Monday, police said, reports the Mainichi Shimbun (May 19).
A little after 11:25 a.m., a woman passing by an apartment building in Honjo-nishi alerted emergency services. “Someone has fallen from a high place,” she said. “A cyclist was also caught up in the accident.”
Both the man who fell from the building and the victim on the bicycle were in cardiac arrest upon arrival at a hospital. However, they were both later confirmed dead.
According to the Oyodo Police Station, the 70-year-old man lived on the 43rd floor of the apartment building. Based on belongings found at the scene, the other man was a 59-year-old resident of Chiba Prefecture.
An examination of security camera footage and other sources revealed that the 70-year-old man struck the bicyclist pedaling on the sidewalk. Police found the bicyclist’s yellow bicycle to be in a mangled state upon arrival at the scene.
The incident occurred in a residential area about 400 meters west of Tenjinbashisuji Rokuchome Station on the Osaka Metro.
Police and other authorities are currently investigating the details of the incident.
