Kyoto cops nab gang boss in pot bust

KYOTO (TR) – Kyoto Prefectural Police have arrested the boss and a high-ranking member of an organized crime group for the supply of illegal drugs, reports the Sankei Shimbun (July 13).

On June 4, Mitsugu Baba, the 75-year-old boss of the Aizukotetsu-kai, allegedly used a courier service to ship four grams of marijuana to a gang-affiliated residence in Shiga Prefecture.

Police also arrested Ichiro Ogami, 50, the head of the Baba-gumi, an affiliate gang of the Aizukotetsu-kai, and three other persons.

None of the suspects has commented on the allegations.

According to the anti-organized crime division of the prefectural police, the Aizukotetsu-kai, which is based in Kyoto’s Ukyo Ward, has approximately 130 members. Baba became the head of the gang in November of 2008.
