Turkish detainee secured after threatening to jump from 8th floor of Tokyo immigration bureau

TOKYO (TR) – A Turkish national was secured by officials on Wednesday afternoon after attempting to leap from the eighth floor of the Tokyo Regional Immigration Services Bureau in Minato Ward, reports the Sankei Shimbun (May 20).

According to investigative sources, the man broke out of his holding room earlier in the day. He then made his way to the eighth floor of the facility, where he prepared to jump while shouting, “I will commit suicide.”

An emergency services call was placed at approximately 12:25 p.m. reporting a person attempting to jump from the building, prompting a rapid deployment from both the Metropolitan Police Department and the Tokyo Fire Department.

Following a tense standoff, immigration personnel who had been actively trying to persuade the man to step back from the ledge successfully secured him at around 4:00 p.m.

The Tokyo Wangan Police Station confirmed the detainee’s nationality and reported that he did not sustain any injuries during the incident.
