Teenage Kanagawa police officer in critical condition after apparent suicide attempt

KANAGAWA (TR) – A teenage male police officer is in critical condition after being found collapsed and bleeding from his head in a restroom at a police station in Miyamae Ward, Kawasaki City on Sunday. Police believe he attempted suicide with a handgun, reports NHK (Mar. 31).

At around 8:20 a.m., a colleague of the officer found him collapsed face-down in a men’s restroom on the fourth floor of the Miyamae Police Station.

The officer was unconscious when he was taken to a hospital. He remains in critical condition, police said.

A handgun was found under his body. It gun had been loaned to the officer.

The officer had started work for the day in the morning. Police are investigating the matter to learn whether there were any major issues or problems with his work performance.

Shinichi Okusa, the deputy chief of the Miyamae Police Station, said, “It is truly regrettable and unfortunate that such an incident occurred involving the use of a handgun. We will do our utmost to prevent it from happening again.”
