IBARAKI (TR) – A 22-year-old Sri Lankan man has died while in custody at a police station in Tsuchiura City, local authorities announced, reports TBS News (May 20).
According to the Tsuchiura Police Station, the incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon. A guard conducting a routine patrol of the detention facility noticed that the man, who had been asleep, suddenly stopped snoring.
Upon checking the cell, the guard found the man unresponsive and not breathing. After attempting to secure the detainee’s airway, the guard called for an ambulance. The man was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Investigators noted that there were no conspicuous external injuries on the body, and they do not believe the death was a suicide. Police plan to conduct a judicial autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Defending their handling of the medical emergency, a representative for the Tsuchiura Police Station stated, “We believe we responded appropriately.”
