Passerby discovers floating corpse in Aichi river, finds it again hours later after police fail search

AICHI (TR) – A pedestrian made a grisly discovery in Ichinomiya City when he spotted a corpse floating in a river, only to have to track the body down a second time after police failed to locate it, reports the Chunichi Shimbun (Oct. 15).

At around 8:30 a.m. on October 14, the male passerby was near Gongen Bridge in Hokutan-cho when he noticed a body floating in the Nikko River and immediately dialed police.

The Ichinomiya Police Station mobilized a 14-officer team to scour the area. However, after three hours of fruitless searching, police failed to find the remains.

Later that day, the man who originally reported the incident spotted the floating corpse once again, this time about 250 meters downstream from the bridge. He visited the police station in person at 4:15 p.m. to notify authorities of his second discovery, allowing officers to finally secure the scene and confirm the presence of the body.

According to police, the deceased is a male of unknown age. Investigators believe a significant amount of time had passed since his death.

Police are currently working to identify the remains and determine the cause of death.
