Osaka police take man into custody after downtown stabbing leaves 1 dead, 2 injured

OSAKA (TR) – Osaka Prefectural Police have arrested a male suspect after a stabbing incident in downtown Osaka City left a 17-year-old boy dead and two others injured late Saturday, reports the Sankei Shimbun (Feb. 15).

At shortly after 11:50 p.m., a passerby to a commercial building near the Dotonbori River in Chuo Ward called police. “People are being stabbed,” the caller said.

According to police, Takanosuke Kamata, a resident of Nara Prefecture, was stabbed multiple times, including in the chest. He was later confirmed dead.

Two other male victims, also 17, were also stabbed in the upper body and taken to a hospital. One of the two victims is in critical condition, police said.

A witness said, “Everyone was screaming and running around, running around like crazy. I saw one person collapse, and another was being given CPR.”

After the incident, the suspected perpetrator fled the scene while still holding a knife. However, police said on Sunday that they have taken a man in his 20s into custody.

Police are investigating the incident as murder.
