KYOTO (TR) – Kyoto Prefectural Police have confirmed that one person died following an express train colliding with a car at a railroad crossing in the town of Seiko on Saturday, reports Fuji News Network (Dec. 21).
At just after 11:00 a.m., the car was struck by a limited express train on the Kintetsu Kyoto Line at the railroad crossing between Komada and Shin-Hosono stations.
Upon impact, the car exploded into flames. Footage shot by commuters at Shin-Hosono Station shortly after the impact show flames and smoke coming from the vehicle and engulfing the railway.
The person confirmed dead was the occupant of the car.
According to Kintetsu Railway, none of the approximately 100 passengers and crew on the express train were injured. However, service was suspended on some sections, causing disruptions to the train schedule.
Police and others are currently investigating the cause of the accident.
