MSDF lieutenant nabbed with meth in Shinjuku parking lot

TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested a 49-year-old lieutenant in the Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF) for the possession of methamphetamine in Shinjuku Ward.

Shinya Ito allegedly possessed approximately 0.8 grams of kakuseizai (methamphetamine) in a parking lot in the Shinjuku 2-chome district at around 2:50 a.m. on April 28.

Upon his arrest for violating the Stimulants Control Law, the lieutenant admitted to the charges.

According to investigative sources, police officers on a routine neighborhood patrol spotted Ito standing alone in the parking lot that morning.

Officers approached him for voluntary questioning and conducted a search of his belongings, leading to the discovery of a bag containing the illicit drugs stashed inside his own bag.

Ito, who was off-duty at the time of the incident, was then taken into custody.

Regarding the arrest, the Self-Defense Forces commented, “We take this matter very seriously. We will cooperate with the police investigation and respond strictly and appropriately based on the facts of the case.”
