CHIBA (TR) – Police in Chiba City have arrested a 69-year-old man for allegedly stealing a backpack containing over 10 million yen in cash from a car while the driver took a nap inside, reports TV Asahi (May 13).
Toshio Sugita, a transport worker, is accused of snatching the backpack — which held 10.1 million yen and a laptop computer — from a vehicle parked on a street in Chuo Ward in August of last year.
During police questioning, Sugita admitted to the allegations. However, he claimed he had no idea the bag contained such a massive amount of cash at the time of the theft.
According to police, the 56-year-old victim had dozed off in the driver’s seat without locking the car doors. He had left the backpack on the floor at the foot of the passenger seat. The crime came to light when the man woke up and realized his belongings were missing.
Police are continuing to investigate the detailed circumstances surrounding the incident.
