FUKUOKA (TR) – Fukuoka Prefectural Police have concluded their investigation into a former married couple accused of carrying out a string of burglaries at Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) restaurants, reports TV Nishi Nippon (Sep. 3).
Shotaro Sada, a 44-year-old unemployed resident of Nogata City, and his 42-year-old ex-wife were arrested and referred to prosecutors on suspicion of theft and trespassing, police announced.
According to investigators, the pair allegedly broke into closed KFC outlets in Dazaifu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, and neighboring Oita Prefecture in March, making off with safes and bankbooks.
Police say the suspects gained entry to the restaurants by shattering the glass of the drive-thru reception windows. Investigators believe the duo is responsible for a localized crime spree, targeting a total of nine KFC locations between February and April of this year.
During questioning, Sada admitted to the allegations, revealing why they specifically targeted the fried chicken chain.
“The structure of the stores was similar, and the location of the back office where the safe is kept was also similar,” Sada told police. He added that the burglaries were committed to “repay debts and cover living expenses.”
Meanwhile, his ex-wife continues to deny the charges.
