HYOGO (TR) – A 50-year-old woman arrested for abandoning the body of her ex-husband inside a freezer has admitted to forging and submitting their divorce papers after he died, investigative sources revealed, reports NHK (July 13).
Last month, Aki Mochizuki was arrested on suspicion of corpse abandonment after the body of her ex-husband, a former resident of the property, was discovered inside a large freezer at an apartment in Kobe City’s Chuo Ward.
According to police, the victim is estimated to have died around December 2011. However, official records show that divorce proceedings between the man and Mochizuki were finalized a full year later, in December 2012.
When questioned about the unnatural timeline, Mochizuki reportedly told investigators, “After my husband died, I filled out the divorce papers myself and submitted them to the government office.”
While Mochizuki initially admitted to the allegations surrounding the abandonment of the body, sources indicate she has since become uncooperative and is largely refusing to respond to further questioning during interrogations.
Prosecutors are expected to formally indict her on the charge of corpse abandonment on the 14th, the expiration date of her detention period.
Meanwhile, police are continuing to investigate the exact cause of the man’s death and the circumstances that led to the gruesome discovery.
