Knife-wielding robber flees Ibaraki convenience store after clerk fights back

IBARAKI (TR) – Police in the town of Yachiyo are hunting for an armed man who attempted to rob a convenience store before fleeing empty-handed when the clerk bravely fought back, reports TV Asahi (June 30).

The incident occurred at the convenience store at around 3:00 a.m. on Tuesday. According to police, the suspect approached the register and thrust a knife-like object at a male clerk in his 40s.

However, the clerk refused to back down. He physically resisted the attacker and attempted to wrestle the blade away. Spooked by the unexpected counterattack, the would-be robber turned and fled the store on foot without taking any cash.

Police have released security camera footage of the suspect. He is described as being between 20 and 40 years old, approximately 170 centimeters tall, and of a solid build. At the time of the attempted heist, he was wearing a black mask and had a black towel wrapped around his head.

Authorities have deployed an emergency dragnet and are continuing to track the fugitive’s whereabouts.
