Brothers suspected in theft of cables from Nakano construction site

TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested two brothers from Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture over the alleged theft of copper cables from an apartment construction site in Nakano Ward last year, reports the Sankei Shimbun (July 1).

In June 2024, Ryo Goshima, 32, of Konan Ward, Yokohama, and Yuji Goshima, 31, of Asahi Ward, Yokohama, allegedly worked together to steal 20 bundles of copper cables — worth about 400,000 yen at the time — from the site, which was for an apartment building.

Upon their arrests on suspicion of theft, both men admitted to the charges. Ryo told the Nakano Police Station, “I wanted the money right away, so I committed the theft.”

To gain access to the site, Yuji first climbed over a fence from a neighboring apartment and entered the construction site. After opening the service entrance, Ryo entered.

The cables were owned by a contractor in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa. The pair later took them to a contractor in Saitama Prefecture and exchanged them for over 200,000 yen.

Police arrested the two suspects after an examination of security camera footage.

Police are investigating whether the two suspects were behind other thefts in the ward.
