KANAGAWA (TR) – Kanagawa Prefectural Police suspect two women hit and killed by a train in Kawasaki City on Monday committed suicide, reports the Sankei Shimbun (Apr. 24).
At 2:20 p.m. on Monday, the two women, believed to be sisters aged in their 70s and 90s, falling onto the tracks at Kakio Station before being struck by a rapid express train of the Odakyu Odawara Line passing through the station, according to Asao Police Station. The women were later confirmed dead at a nearby hospital.
An examination of surveillance camera footage showed the women, one of whom was using a cane, holding hands as they landed on the track bed. No suicide note was found at the scene.
Police are now working to confirm the identity of the two women.
The incident caused 60 trains on the line to be delayed in both directions between Shin-Yurigaoka and Machida stations for about two hours, affecting roughly 24,000 people.
