TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have launched an investigation following the discovery of a male corpse floating in a river in Hachioji City, reports TV Asahi (Dec. 12).

At around 7:20 a.m. on Monday, emergency services received a tip about a “a person collapsed” in the Yachigawa River in the Ishikawamachi area.

Officers from the Hachioji Police Station arriving at the river found the body of a man, believed to be in his 30s, lying face-up in the middle of the river.

The body was clothed only in underwear. The arms, legs and head of the body had suffered abrasions.

The case is being treated as the result of foul play. Police are now working to identify the body.

The location of the discovery is a residential area about four kilometers northeast of JR Hachioji Station.
