TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Customs have seized more than 150 kilograms of stimulant drugs from a ship originating from China that arrived in Tokyo, reports NHK (Dec. 14).
Tokyo Metropolitan Police arrested a male of Taiwanese origin, 37, on charges of smuggling after a container ship from Fujian Province arrived at a port in Koto Ward in October with 152 kilograms of kakuseizai, or stimulant drugs, concealed on board.
The drugs have an estimated value of 10.5 billion yen.
Customs officials found the contraband, subdivided into one-kilogram packages and hidden in metal containers, during an inspection of the vessel.
The suspect entered Japan on November 11. He was later arrested after it was learned that he had instructed for the drugs to arrive at an apartment in Adachi Ward.
The suspect admits to the allegations, according to TV Asahi (Dec. 14).
Police are now investigating whether the suspect is a part of a large smuggling ring.
