AICHI (TR) – Aichi Prefectural Police are investigating what is believed to have been a suicide after a female high school student was stuck and killed by a train in Gamagori City, reports Nippon News Network (June 14).
At 5:45 p.m. on Monday, the girl, 15, jumped from the platform at Mikawa-Otsuka Station onto the tracks and into the path of a freight train traveling on the Tokaido Main Line.
A note was found within her belongings. The contents of the letter did not mention bullying or other problems.
Several people witnessed the student jumping onto the tracks. According to the Yomiuri Shimbun (June 14), the driver of the train saw the girl and applied emergency breaks but could not avoid striking her.
Train services were disrupted for approximately 2.5 hours between Toyohashi and Gamagori stations in both directions, inconveniencing roughly 12,000 passengers.
