TOKYO (TR) – A man in his 30s attempting to evade a groping accusation suffered severe injuries after he leaped from a train platform and was hit by a train at JR Shimbashi Station, reports the Sankei Shimbun (Jan. 20).

Prior to 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, the man allegedly fondled the body of a woman in her 20s inside a car of the JR Tokaido Line. After the woman complained to train personnel at Shimbashi Station, the man was apprehended on the platform.

However, the man escaped prior to the arrival of police and jumped down onto the tracks. He was then struck by another Tokaido Line train.

The man suffered a broken pelvis and other injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Roughly 23,000 passengers on 29 lines were delayed for about 25 minutes due to the incident.

Police are expected to begin questioning the man about the case once his condition improves.
