KUMAMOTO (TR) – Kumamoto Prefectural Police have arrested a man for placing his three-year-old nephew in a garbage bag and throwing him against the floor.

The Asahi Shimbun (Dec. 2) reported that 39-year-old Yuichi Murakami was detained on suspicion of confinement and assault in Kumamoto City, on the southwestern main island of Kyushu. Police said the suspect “does not want to talk.”

According to a statement from the Kumamoto-Higashi Police Station, the suspect became angry that the son of his sister-in-law would not stop crying before dinner at her residence at around 6:00 p.m. on October 9 and pushed him into a cardboard box. He then covered the boy’s head with a 30-liter garbage bag, locked him in the box, and suspended him upside down.

Murakami is also suspected of grabbing the boy by the chest when he came out of the garbage bag and throwing him against the floor. Police said they have been unable to confirm if the boy has been injured.

The suspect, his wife, and their three children had moved into the home of the wife’s older sister in April.

Murakami had been arrested on November 13 on assault charges including pinching the boy’s wrists with scissors. After being released without indictment, he was arrested again on December 2 after his sister-in-law and her grandmother revealed details on the latest charges.
