KANAGAWA (TR) – Kanagawa Prefectural Police early Monday arrested a 54-year-old man in Yamato City after he injured two police officers with a sword, reports TBS News (Dec. 14).
At approximately 8:40 p.m. on Sunday, Kanagawa Prefectural Police received a call from a man who said a female neighbor, 81, had taken refuge at his home due the violent behavior of her son.
Two officers arriving at the woman’s residence, located about 300 meters from Minami Rinkan Station on the Odakyu Enoshima Line, were subsequently slashed by the man, 54, who was wielding a Japanese sword. One officer was cut in the face while the other received a wound to a finger on his left hand.
After the assault, the man then barricaded himself inside the residence. At approximately 2:00 a.m. on Monday, police stormed the house and apprehended the man.
The woman also suffered broken ribs in the incident. All three victims were taken to a nearby hospital. None of the injuries are considered serious.
According to the Mainichi Shimbun (Dec. 14), the man has been suffering from a mental disorder for at least 20 years and regularly visits the hospital for treatment.
