TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have revealed that a former top-ranked sumo wrestler from Russia in custody on suspicion of sexually assaulting a woman lured her by telling her he was once a grappler, reports Fuji News Network (July 16).
On the night of April 5, Amuru, whose real name is Nikolay Ivanov, and his acquaintance, 34-year-old Alisher Ergashevich Ochilov from Uzbekistan, are alleged to have sexually assaulted the woman, aged in her 30s, inside a private room at a karaoke parlor.
They also allegedly robbed her of 40,000 yen.
Police have not revealed whether the suspects admit to allegations of non-consensual sexual intercourse and robbery.
Prior to the incident, the suspects met the woman at a bar. While there, Amuru lured the woman to the karaoke by parlor by showing her photos from his smartphone of him wrestling.
Before his retirement in 2018, Amuru reached fifth position in the top maegashira division.
