TOKYO (TR) – A 28-year-old security guard has been arrested after a dropped two-way radio linked him to a violent shoplifting attempt in Minato Ward that left a supermarket loss-prevention officer injured, police announced Friday.
Yu Sasaki is accused of stealing four bento box lunches—valued at approximately 2,500 yen—from a supermarket in the Mita area on Thursday, reports TV Asahi (Apr. 10).
“I didn’t have any money,” Sasaki said in admitting to the allegations.
During his getaway, Sasaki allegedly assaulted an undercover store security guard, commonly known as a “shoplifting G-man,” injuring the officer before fleeing the premises.
However, the suspect’s escape was quickly thwarted. Investigators recovered a work-issued walkie-talkie that Sasaki left behind at the crime scene, which served as the crucial clue leading to his identification and subsequent arrest.
Local authorities are continuing to investigate the exact circumstances surrounding the theft and the ensuing altercation.
