To be filed under “hot for teacher.”
A school in Indonesia is in hot water for utilizing an image of a popular adult video (AV) star from Japan in teaching materials, reports weekly tabloid Shukan Jitsuwa (Sep. 3).
A photograph of Maria Ozawa, who is also known as “Miyabi,” appeared inside a study sheet for an English class at a high school in East Java.
The sheet was an adjective exercise in which the students were requested to fill in descriptive words for a column of images, one of which was a black-and-white image of the face of Ozawa, who appeared right below that of a lion.
“In seeking to complete the task, the students looked up ‘Miyabi’ and ‘Maria Ozawa‘ on the Internet,” a Japanese resident in Indonesia tells the tabloid. “The search results included film titles that used hard-core phrases like ‘full sex’ and ‘vaginal ejaculation.'”
The result was a frenzied student body. The parents of the students, however, were less enthusiastic.
“The school was subsequently flooded with complaints,” continues the resident.
As first reported in Taiwan’s Xinhuaxia News in early August, it is not clear how the students knew that the image was that of a famous AV actress. But it is widely known that Ozawa, who is half Japanese, half French-Canadian, enjoys tremendous popularity outside of Japan. (For the June issue of the Philippines edition of FHM magazine Ozawa was featured on the cover.)
In Indonesia, men find her exotic looks very appealing, says Shukan Jitsuwa, and bootleg DVDs of her films sell very well, in spite of strict laws prohibiting such material.
“Among Indonesian men, she is considered a kindred spirit,” the Japanese resident says. “She trails only singer Mayumi Itsuwa as the most famous Japanese woman (in Indonesia).”
That does not mean she is not a controversial figure, In 2010, Ozawa appeared in the Indonesian film “Menculik Miyabi” (Kidnapping Miyabi), though protests of her role by a conservative group called the Islamic Defenders Front caused all of her scenes to be filmed in Japan.
As to her assistance in teaching Indonesian children to speak English, the board of education in East Java has inquired with the publisher of the learning materials.
“We are conducting a detailed investigation on the circumstances for what lead to the appearance of Maria Ozawa and will report the results promptly,” a representative of the board is quoted.
In the meantime, young people in East Java can fine-tune the use of “sexy” and “erotic” in English sentences.
