TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police on Saturday announced the arrest of a former gang member for extorting a prostitution club, reports TV Asahi (Nov. 15).

Officers took Kaazumasa Wada, a 39-year-old former member of the Yamaguchi-gumi, into custody for extorting 820,000 yen — termed mikajimeryo — from the male manager of a prostitution club between July and September.

The club, which was busted for prostitution in October, used deai-kei “encounter” matchmaking sites to recruit customers.

Wada allegedly threatened the manager by saying that non-payment would result in him having to cut off his finger. The suspect also said that he had accrued debts by playing mahjong and wanted money to pay the hotel bills of his boss.

Over a one-year period, Wada collected a total of eight million yen in revenue, according to Fuji News Network (Nov. 15).
