Just before the incident, the girl was on her way out to buy a present for her father. After the assault, she ran to her elementary school, where a teacher at the school called police.

Police later identified Yamaguchi as a suspect and put him on a wanted list in November.

On February 6, Yamaguchi’s mother reported that she had seen her son at a drugstore. Police officers searched the area arrested Yamaguchi in the parking lot of a convenience store.

During questioning, Yamaguchi admitted to the charges, saying, “I did it, there’s no doubt about it.”
