TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested a 77-year-old man over the alleged fatal ramming of a woman believed to be his wife on a street in Edogawa Ward, reports Kyodo News (Dec. 28).
At around 5:30 a.m., a passerby called emergency services to report that a woman was collapsed and unconscious on a street in the ward. She was later confirmed dead at a hospital.
Police later arrested Norio Nakamura, 77, on suspicion of murder. “My wife suspected me of cheating,” the suspect told police, “and we had a lovers’ quarrel. I got angry and excited. She then stood in front of my car, and I ran her over, trampling her to death.”
After the incident, Nakamura fled the scene in the vehicle. Police used security camera footage to later apprehend him on a street in Funabashi City, Chiba Prefecture.
Police are currently in the process of confirming the woman’s identity.
