Ex-Tokyo YMCA instructor accused of sexually assaulting disabled woman

TOKYO (TR) — Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested a 40-year-old former instructor of the Tokyo YMCA for allegedly committing an indecent act on a disabled woman, reports TV Asahi (May 12).

Masayuki Shigetome is accused of sexually assaulting the student inside a classroom in the Nishi-Waseda area of Shinjuku Ward in March 2023. At the time, Shigetome was in charge of a support program designed to teach social manners and daily life skills to students with disabilities.

During police questioning, Shigetome admitted to the core allegations. “There is no doubt I committed an indecent act. It was to satisfy my sexual desires,” he told investigators. However, he has partially denied the charges regarding the specific details of the assault, claiming he “does not remember” exactly what he did.

According to investigative sources, the two were alone in the classroom when Shigetome called the victim over, telling her to “come closer.” Police believe the suspect deliberately took advantage of her psychological state, knowing she would be unable to resist his advances.

The incident came to light after the woman returned home and told her father, “He said we were going to practice making a baby.” Her outraged parents immediately consulted the police, prompting an investigation.
