SHIZUOKA (TR) – Local residents in Shizuoka City thwarted a getaway on Thursday morning, apprehending a 76-year-old man who fled on a bicycle after plundering a local field of its produce, reports TV Asahi (Apr. 10).
On the morning of April 9, a woman in her 50s caught sight of the suspect attempting to pedal away from her agricultural property. Realizing her crop had been targeted, she shouted “Thief!” and immediately gave chase on foot.
Alerted by the woman’s desperate cries, a passerby called police, reporting to police that a woman was pursuing a man down the street.
The suspect appeared poised for a clean escape as his bicycle began to outpace the victim. However, his flight was abruptly cut short when a male neighbor, hearing the commotion, stepped directly into the suspect’s path and physically restrained him.
Officers arriving at the scene formally took the suspect, identified as an unemployed 76-year-old man, into police custody.
According to investigators, the grand total of the man’s illicit haul was exactly 10 onions, valued at a mere 300 yen.
