GSDF member accused of assisting in suicide of girlfriend

FUKUOKA (TR) – In connection with the death of a woman found hanged in an apartment in Kurume City last year, police on Tuesday arrested her boyfriend, a male Self-Defense Force member, on suspicion of aiding and abetting her suicide, reports Kyushu Asahi TV (Feb. 24).

The suspect is Daiji Eira, a 39-year-old member of the Ground Self-Defense Force’s Fukuoka Regional Cooperation Headquarters.

According to police, Eira is suspected of persuading his girlfriend, 42, to commit suicide in December. He then coerced her into hanging herself in a closet at their apartment in Kurume.

During police questioning, Eira partially denied the charges. He said, “I never talked about suicide, but I prepared the rope. He added, “I intended to die with her.”

Eira also cut his own stomach with a kitchen knife and was taken to the hospital unconscious. However, he later regained consciousness.

Interviews with relevant parties revealed that the woman showed no signs of intending to commit suicide, which led to his arrest.
