HOKKAIDO (TR) – Hokkaido Prefectural Police have arrested a 39-year-old male in the abandoning of his girlfriend’s body inside the apartment they share in Hakodate City, reports the Sankei Shimbun (Aug. 17).

On Sunday, officers from the Chuo Police Station took Yusuke Sato into custody after the discovery of the body of 21-year-old Shiori Ono in a bedroom on the second floor of the residence. The night before, the suspect arrived at the station to report that he had beaten her to death.

“We got in a fight and I hit her in the head,” the suspect is quoted by police.

When investigators arrived at the apartment, Ono’s badly decomposed body was found lying atop a futon. It is estimated that she died at least one week before the discovery, according to the Mainichi Shimbun (Aug. 16).

The couple had been living together for about one year. In July of last year, Sato was arrested for striking Ono. However, she withdrew her complaint and the indictment against Sato was suspended.

Police will seek to apply manslaughter charges after the determination of the cause of death via the results of an autopsy.
