Young woman found dead on Yamanote Line tracks near Ikebukuro Station

TOKYO (TR) – A young woman was found dead on the JR Yamanote Line tracks near Ikebukuro Station on Sunday morning, prompting a three-hour suspension of Tokyo’s busiest train loop, reports Fuji News Network (Aug. 23).

At approximately 9:30 a.m., a train crew member spotted a person lying face down on the tracks in the Kami-Ikebukuro area of Toshima Ward and immediately dialed police. Emergency responders arrived to find a young female, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Tokyo Metropolitan Police believe the woman was struck by a moving Yamanote Line train. Investigators are currently analyzing security camera footage to determine exactly how and when she trespassed into the restricted track area.

The discovery caused severe disruptions to weekend travel. Both the inner and outer loops of the Yamanote Line were halted for roughly three hours, affecting an estimated 85,000 passengers.
